About Oxley

Oxley is a thriving little semi-rural community of approximately 300 people.  Originally surveyed in the late 1800s, the number of households has grown steadily since the mid-1970s. Oxley is valued for its beautiful natural surrounds, strong sense of community and close proximity to Wangaratta, to which many residents commute for work.  The township provides facilities including the general store, post office, café, service station, shire hall, fire brigade, primary school, park and recreation reserve.

The surrounding district remains a grazing and dairy-farming area.  Vineyards, wineries and gourmet food producers have also become an important part of the landscape.  Oxley is part of the renowned Milawa Gourmet Region – an area that boasts a proliferation of food producers and wineries – proclaimed in 1994 as Australia’s first gourmet region.
